Bauhaus Luftfahrt presenting at Sustainability Conference in Berlin

Nov 22, 2011 | Bauhaus Luftfahrt has again presented its findings and research work on topics in regard to sustainable aviation at a notable international meeting. “Greener Skies Ahead 2011”, the third international conference for the reduction of the global aviation’s environmental impact held on 16th and 17th of November in Berlin, brought together experts and management from numerous fields of the aviation business to discuss challenges, progress and perspectives of more eco-friendly air travel.

On behalf of Bauhaus Luftfahrt, Dr. Andreas Sizmann presented strategic considerations and recent research findings in the field of long-term energy perspectives for the aviation sector. In his speech, he highlighted three different strategies for the application of renewable energy, the latter ranging from production pathways for synthetic kerosene as a so-called “drop-in” solution for short and medium term application in existing aircraft and infrastructure on to the feasibility of all-electric flight as a potentially emission-free long-term alternative.

As the head of the „Future Technologies and Ecology of Aviation“ Group, Dr. Sizmann provided the attending managers from industry and non-government organizations, scientists as well as institute and project leaders with a detailed outlook on socio-economically and scientifically reasonable scenarios for the establishment of alternative energies in aviation developed at Bauhaus Luftfahrt.

Especially the introduction of the topics „Solar fuels“ and „Emission-free electric flight“ provided for two valuable contributions to the active discussion in Berlin. Furthermore, the holistic approach in which research at Bauhaus Luftfahrt is conducted was demonstratively highlighted.
