Mission Statement

Bauhaus Luftfahrt was created in November 2005 by the three aerospace companies EADS, Liebherr-Aerospace and MTU Aero Engines as well as the Bavarian Ministry for Economic Affairs. In January 2012, IABG-Industrieanlagen-Betriebsgesellschaft became the latest member of the institution. The non-profit association is an internationally-oriented think tank. The team of around 35 scientists deals with the future of mobility in general and with the future of air travel in particular. The goal of the research work is to consider the complex system of aviation from different points of view. In every project, the technical, economic, social and ecological aspects are considered holistically.

International Address of Aerospace

Jul 13, 2010 | On 9 July 2010, Munich Aerospace – a joint faculty of the Technical University Munich (TUM), the University of the Federal Armed Forces Munich (UniBwM), the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and Bauhaus Luftfahrt (BHL) – was created in Munich as a research, development and training platform of the Munich aerospace community. To this purpose, top level representatives of TUM, UniBwM, DLR and BHL congregated in the afternoon at the Deutsches Museum Munich to sign the corporate charter.

The joint faculty Munich Aerospace is going to bundle the strengths of the internationally-oriented research and technology site of Munich towards common research projects within the aerospace sector. It is the goal to integrate industrial research and manufacturing competences by effectively using the expertise of around 55 professorships. By concluding an agreement of objectives with the Technical University Munich, the Bavarian Ministry for Sciences grants Munich Aerospace an annual budget of EUR 150,000 for up to five years; the Bavarian Ministry for Economic Affairs is going to assist the faculty financially as well.

With regards to contents, Munich Aerospace is going to start with research networks on "Autonomous Flight Systems" (co-ordination TUM), "Safety in Orbit" (co-ordination UniBwM) and "Geodetic Earth Observation" (co-ordination DLR). Additionally, it is the intention to establish the "International Graduate School of Aerospace Sciences and Technology", offering a demanding international training program. Hence, a number of new professorships is going to be instituted, including the chairs of "Autonomous Flight Systems" (TUM – DLR), "Satellite and Probe Propulsion Systems" (TUM) and "Adaptive Systems in Aerospace" (TUM).
