Mission Statement

Bauhaus Luftfahrt was created in November 2005 by the three aerospace companies EADS, Liebherr-Aerospace and MTU Aero Engines as well as the Bavarian Ministry for Economic Affairs. In January 2012, IABG-Industrieanlagen-Betriebsgesellschaft became the latest member of the institution. The non-profit association is an internationally-oriented think tank. The team of around 35 scientists deals with the future of mobility in general and with the future of air travel in particular. The goal of the research work is to consider the complex system of aviation from different points of view. In every project, the technical, economic, social and ecological aspects are considered holistically.

Jul 25, 2011 | The final report of the European Commission-funded study “Sustainable Way for Alternative Fuels and Energy in Aviation” (SWAFEA), which is co-authored by Bauhaus Luftfahrt, has now officially been published.

On 111 pages the document presents the combined findings of the research consortium which completed its work earlier this year. The report is available for download on the European Commission’s web pages using the following link:

The basic aim of the study was to provide the scientific background for political decision making regarding the implementation of alternative fuels, mainly biofuels, in aviation. The study was performed by 19 international stakeholders from all areas of aviation such as airlines, airframers, fuel producers, non-governmental organizations, research institutes and universities. Bauhaus Luftfahrt contributed as a member of the core team as well as a leader in several work packages, and organized two international stakeholder conferences.
