Mission Statement

Bauhaus Luftfahrt was created in November 2005 by the three aerospace companies EADS, Liebherr-Aerospace and MTU Aero Engines as well as the Bavarian Ministry for Economic Affairs. In January 2012, IABG-Industrieanlagen-Betriebsgesellschaft became the latest member of the institution. The non-profit association is an internationally-oriented think tank. The team of around 35 scientists deals with the future of mobility in general and with the future of air travel in particular. The goal of the research work is to consider the complex system of aviation from different points of view. In every project, the technical, economic, social and ecological aspects are considered holistically.

Workshop on "Concept Evaluation"

Mar 04, 2010 | The aim of the European CREATE project – in which Bauhaus Luftfahrt is a major stakeholder – is to develop a process for identifying and promoting innovative ideas for the future of air transport, which are characterised by great potential benefits and, at the same time, high risks with respect to their implementation. Such ideas are not considered in the existing framework for research funding and shall therefore in the future be advanced by means of an incubation mechanism on a European scale.

To evaluate the viability of future concepts, Bauhaus Luftfahrt together with the Technical University Munich has compiled a catalogue of criteria, which will be the basis for a benefit and risk assessment of innovative ideas. During a workshop on 24 February 2010, this catalogue was presented to a group of select aviation experts and examined in work groups. The workshop allowed Bauhaus Luftfahrt to gather useful feedback, which will be incorporated when enhancing the catalogue of criteria.
