Interdisciplinary research at Bauhaus Luftfahrt
Fundamental technologies, trends, changing interests of key stakeholders, and future driving forces are often accompanied by large uncertainties and unknowns in the long-term development. Thus, the combination of multiple disciplines is mandatory to design feasible and solid concepts and solutions for the long-term future of aviation. This interdisciplinary work is a key element of Bauhaus Luftfahrt´s research activities and is concentrated within distinctive research focus areas: Projects and research tasks are always elaborated in heterogeneous teams of experts from various competence areas.
With a profound understanding of future scenarios and trends impacting aviation, the research focus area “Operations” investigates the implications for air transport based on future mobility conditions. Starting from a solid knowledge of the future drivers of the air transport system, research questions concerning future requirements of passengers, airlines, and airports as well as novel processes related to aircraft operation are analysed. Promising technologies and approaches, such as novel intermodal transport concepts, airside operations, or business models, are implemented in the air transport system and evaluated on an operational level. The results identify efficiency potentials and hence recommendations for different stakeholders of the air transport system can be given.
