Foreword / Vorwort 4 / 5 Dear readers, It’s time to celebrate! Bauhaus Luftfahrt is having its 20th anni- versary in its unique position as the world’s only think tank for aviation. More than two decades ago key industrial players teamed up, supported by the government of Bavaria, with the idea and clear motivation to found an interdisciplinary research organization to identify and evaluate the long-term options for the development of our global air transport system. Why did we walk that path, considering the existence of world-class organizations and universities in our research and technology networks? When looking into radical technologies or considering new options “outside our box” of current oper- ations, it does require an agile team of experts, who can take a step back from the status quo and still scientifically assess such novel approaches. A team of researchers with a broad range of expertise, well beyond the aeronautical scope, con- centrating on upstream options that could bring about a change. Liebe Leserinnen und Leser, Zeit zum Feiern! Das Bauhaus Luftfahrt besteht seit 20 Jah- ren als einzigartiger Thinktank für die Luftfahrt. Vor mehr als zwei Dekaden schlossen sich führende Industrieakteure unterstützt von der Bayerischen Staatsregierung mit einer klaren Vision und Motivation zusammen: die Gründung einer interdisziplinären Forschungseinrichtung, um langfristige Entwicklungsmöglichkeiten für das globale Luftverkehrs- system zu identifizieren und zu bewerten. Warum haben wir diesen Weg eingeschlagen, trotz existie- render erstklassiger Universitäten und Organisationen in unserem Forschungs- und Technologienetzwerk? Um radi- kale Technologien und neue, unkonventionelle Optionen zu untersuchen, braucht es ein agiles Expertenteam, das sich bewusst vom Status quo löst und die neuartigen Ansätze zugleich wissenschaftlich fundiert bewertet. Ein Team von Forschenden mit breit gefächerter Expertise weit über den aeronautischen Bereich hinaus, das sich gezielt mit zukunfts- weisenden Lösungen beschäftigt, die einen Wandel herbei- führen könnten. In that role, Bauhaus Luftfahrt has matured over time from quite a provocative character in its “start-up” phase to an internationally well recognized think tank for aviation – espe- cially in the current situation, with multiple pathways being identified to achieve climate neutrality for aviation. Thus, a balanced and independent position is needed in order to focus activities and investments as the required changes to our system will be massive – both technologically and opera- tionally. In dieser Rolle hat sich Bauhaus Luftfahrt über die Jahre hinweg von einem anfangs durchaus provokanten „Start- up“-Charakter zu einem international anerkannten Thinktank für die Luftfahrt entwickelt – gerade in einer Situation, in der zahlreiche Wege zu einem klimaneutralen Luftverkehr identi- fiziert werden. Eine ausgewogene und unabhängige Position ist entscheidend, um Aktivitäten und Investitionen gezielt auszurichten. Denn die notwendigen Veränderungen im Sys- tem werden drastisch sein – technologisch wie operativ. The team from Bauhaus Luftfahrt, jointly with all aviation stakeholders, have identified clear pathways of action. The expansion of renewable hydrogen production as well as car- bon-capturing techniques will be key – regardless of whether we use the hydrogen directly on board the aircraft or as a sustainable aircraft fuel. At the same time increasing fuel effi- ciency of the airframe and engine as well as in operations will be essential to bring down total energy demand and thus cli- mate impact as well as economic impacts from the higher “fuel” cost of sustainable options. Yearbook / Jahrbuch 2024 Liebe Luftfahrtbegeisterte, wann werden wir radikal neue Flugzeugdesigns sehen? Diese Frage wird einem Thinktank für Luftfahrt wohl am häufigsten gestellt. Während ein verändertes Erscheinungs- bild von Flugzeugen oft als naheliegendste Veränderung auf dem Weg zur Klimaneutralität betrachtet wird, sind die anstehenden Entwicklungen weitaus vielfältiger. In den letzten zwei Jahrzehnten hat sich das Team von Bauhaus Luftfahrt intensiv mit der Identifikation und Bewer- tung vielversprechender Ansätze für eine nachhaltige Luft- mobilität beschäftigt. Seit Beginn waren Schlüsselfragen wie diese Teil unserer Forschung: Welche Energieoptionen wer- den künftig eine Rolle spielen? Wie lassen sich verschiedene Verkehrsträger effizienter verknüpfen? In welchem Maß kön- nen wir die Effizienz von Flugzeugen und deren Antrieben weiter steigern? Während diese grundlegenden Fragen bestehen bleiben, wurden in der Luftfahrtbranche erhebliche Fortschritte erzielt – sowohl in der technologischen Entwicklung als auch in der Identifikation gangbarer Wege für ein nachhaltiges Luft- verkehrssystem. Einige vielversprechende Konzepte, wie der rein batterieelektrische Flug, bieten zwar große Vorteile, sind aufgrund der aktuellen Batterietechnologie jedoch für viele Marktsegmente noch nicht einsetzbar. Andere Technologien wie Wasserstoff rücken zunehmend in den Fokus, da dieser als Grundlage für skalierbare nachhaltige Flugkraftstoffe dient oder direkt im Flugzeug genutzt werden kann – mit positiven Klima- und Wirtschaftseffekten. Dear aviation enthusiasts, When will we see radically new aircraft designs? This might be the most frequently asked question put to an aviation think tank. While the changed look of an aircraft may be the most expected alteration made to achieve climate neutrality, the changes ahead are much more diverse. In the last two decades the team of Bauhaus Luftfahrt has dedicated its research activities to identifying and evaluating promising options toward achieving sustainable air mobility for society. From the very start, key questions like these were part of our research portfolio: What might the energy options of the future look like? How can the various modes of transportation be integrated more efficiently? To what extent are we able to improve the efficiency of the aircraft and its engines? While key underlying questions remain, quite some progress has been made in the aviation community to advance tech- nologies and to identify viable pathways for a sustainable air transport system. While some very promising options like full battery-electric flight would be very beneficial, battery technologies will not allow their utilization in relevant market segments for the time being. Other technologies like hydro- gen are gaining increasing attention, as it is the basis for scalable sustainable aviation fuels or could even be utilized directly in the aircraft to provide a positive climate impact as well as operational economic benefits. In that quest for innovative solutions our Technology Radar activities have been a core source of innovation. Multiple developments well outside the aviation domain have found their way into promising long-term options for aviation. In dieser Suche nach innovativen Lösungen spielt unser Technology Radar eine zentrale Rolle. Zahlreiche Entwick- lungen außerhalb der Luftfahrtbranche wurden als langfristig vielversprechende Optionen für die Luftfahrt identifiziert. Yearbook / Jahrbuch 2024 20 Years of Bauhaus Luftfahrt In 2005 Bauhaus Luftfahrt was founded with a clear vision in mind: to jointly devel- op innovative and novel approaches in key areas through interdisciplinary coop- eration for the future of aviation. With this goal in mind, Bauhaus Luftfahrt was established as a research organization in a public-private partnership model between leading aviation industries and the German Free State of Bavaria. The joint basic funding was implemented to enable foresight research and allow close exchange between industry, research, policy makers and the public on driving topics for a sustainable air transport system. Im Jahr 2005 wurde das Bauhaus Luftfahrt mit einer klaren Vision gegründet: in interdisziplinärer Zusammenarbeit neuartige Ansätze in Schlüsselbereichen der Luftfahrt der Zukunft zu entwickeln. Führende Unternehmen der Luftfahrtindus- trie sowie der Freistaat Bayern etablierten die Forschungseinrichtung in einem Public-private-Partnership-Modell. Eine gemeinsame Grundfinanzierung er mö- glicht vorausschauende Forschung und fördert den engen Austausch zwischen lndustrie, Wissenschaft, Politik und der Öffentlichkeit zu zentralen Themen eines nachhaltigen Luftverkehrssystems.

20 Years of Bauhaus Luftfahrt 14 / 15 Already in the early years, key areas of research emerged: alternative ener- gy options, stronger intermodal integration of transportation, passenger expectations and economics, as well as the need for radical improvements in aircraft efficiency enabled by novel engine technologies as well as air- frame and systems technologies. Zentrale Forschungsfelder bildeten sich bereits in den Anfangsjahren heraus: alternative Energieoptionen, eine stärkere intermodale Integra- tion des Verkehrs, Passagiererwartungen und wirtschaftliche Aspekte sowie die Notwendigkeit radikaler Effizienzsteigerungen von Flugzeugen durch neue Antriebstechnologien, lnnovationen in der Flugzeugstruktur und den Bordsystemen. Becoming the aviation think tank Very soon it became clear that strategic recommendations for the future development of aviation are only possible if quantified assessments of fundamental potentials are performed for the multiple options at hand. Thus, a specific working model of Bauhaus Luftfahrt was developed: • Actively screening technologies and trends (even well beyond the aviation domain) • Understanding the underlying principles and mechanisms • Deriving new concepts from those principles, utilizing system exper- tise and creativity Performing integrated, quantified assessments (on system, aircraft, or even fleet level) Providing strategic recommendations based on the identified potential • • Important research findings Based on this model and its unique philosophy, Bauhaus Luftfahrt derived a number of important findings over the last 20 years of research, such as: • • • • The greatest innovation potential of “green fuels” is not bio-based. Biofuels are rather a bridging technology for renewable fuel options due to scalability limitations and strong regional dependence on feed- stocks. Sustainable aviation fuels are only viable if they are based on renew- able energy and carbon sources. The availability of renewable hydrogen will be key for aviation, either as the basis for sustainable fuels or even used directly on board aircraft. Battery-electric propulsion for aircraft would provide the best option for climate-neutral flight, but battery technologies need to progress well beyond specific energies of 1 kWh/kg to become viable outside niche applications. Der Weg zum Luftverkehrs-Thinktank Schon bald wurde klar, dass strategische Empfehlungen für die zukünftige Entwicklung der Luftfahrt nur dann fundiert möglich sind, wenn die grund- legenden Potenziale der verschiedenen Optionen quantitativ bewertet werden. Daraus ergab sich ein spezifisches Arbeitsmodell für das Bauhaus Luftfahrt: • • • • • Aktives Screening von Technologien und Trends – auch weit über die Luftfahrt hinaus Verständnis der zugrunde liegenden Prinzipien und Mechanismen Neue Konzepte aus diesen Prinzipien ableiten, mit Systemexpertise und Kreativität Integrierte, quantitative Bewertung auf System-, Flugzeug- oder sogar Flottenebene durchführen Strategische Empfehlungen auf Basis der identifizierten Potenziale bereitstellen Zentrale Forschungserkenntnisse Auf Basis dieses Modells und der einzigartigen Philosophie leitete das Bauhaus Luftfahrt in den vergangenen 20 Jahren zahlreiche zentrale Erkenntnisse ab, darunter: • • • • Die größten lnnovationspotenziale für „grüne Kraftstoffe“ liegen nicht in biobasierten Kraftstoffen. Diese dienen aufgrund ihrer begrenzten Skalierbarkeit und starken regionalen Abhängigkeit eher als Brückentechnologie für erneuerbare Kraftstoffoptionen. Nachhaltige Flugkraftstoffe sind nur dann langfristig tragfähig, wenn sie auf erneuerbaren Energie- und Kohlenstoffquellen basieren. Die Verfügbarkeit von erneuerbarem Wasserstoff wird für die Luft- fahrt entscheidend sein – sei es als Basis für nachhaltige Kraftstoffe oder für den direkten Einsatz im Flugzeug. Batterieelektrische Antriebe bieten grundsätzlich die beste Option für klimaneutrales Fliegen. Jedoch müssen Batterietechnologien weit über eine spezifische Energie von 1 kWh/kg hinausgehen, um für die Luftfahrt jenseits einer Nischenanwendung relevant zu werden.

Yearbook / Jahrbuch 2024 • • • Hybrid-electric propulsion options may contribute to enhanced effi- ciency, but they fall within the same improvement range as other propulsion, structural, or aerodynamic technology options. Operational measures in the air transport system, such as aircraft- sharing or new network structures, can significantly contribute to reducing climate impact (well beyond the 5 – 7% expected from air traffic management improvements). While urban air mobility will remain a niche market with limited in fluence on the air transport system, regional air mobility could contribute if new network structures and intermodal concepts are considered. • • • Hybrid-elektrische Antriebe können die Effizienz steigern, befinden sich jedoch im gleichen Verbesserungsbereich wie andere Innovatio- nen in den Bereichen Antrieb, Struktur oder Aerodynamik. Operationelle Konzepte wie Aircraft Sharing oder neue Netzwerk- strukturen können die Klimawirkungen deutlich stärker reduzieren als die 5 bis 7%, die durch ein verbessertes Air Traffic Management erwartet werden. Während Urban Air Mobility ein Nischenmarkt mit begrenztem Ein- fluss auf das Luftverkehrssystem bleiben wird, könnte Regional Air Mobility einen bedeutenden Beitrag leisten – insbesondere durch neue Netzwerkstrukturen und intermodale Konzepte. Ingredients for success Throughout the years of forward-thinking research, some key ingredients for the success of Bauhaus Luftfahrt have become obvious: Erfolgsfaktoren Im Laufe der Jahre hat sich gezeigt, dass einige zentrale Faktoren für den Erfolg des Bauhaus Luftfahrt essenziell sind: • • • Building a team with a high level of expertise, coupled with curiosity and communication skills, to facilitate active collaboration across disciplines – each with its own “language”. Creating spaces (both in terms of place and time) in daily work for interaction, allowing new ideas to form and evolve. One key contrib- utor to innovation at Bauhaus Luftfahrt has been group design pro- jects, where the entire team works intensively and collaboratively on an overarching question over 3 – 4 months in an agile manner. Strengthening modeling and assessment capabilities to provide well-founded recommendations for the aviation community, policy- makers, and the public. As such, the founding principle based on a public-private partnership with strong basic funding combined with a highly motivated and engaged team has been the key to Bauhaus Luftfahrt’s success as the only aviation think tank worldwide. • • • Aufbau eines Teams mit hoher fachlicher Expertise, kombiniert mit Neugier und Kommunikationsstärke, um aktives lnteragieren zwi- schen verschiedenen Disziplinen zu erreichen, die jeweils ihre eigene „Sprache“ mitbringen. Schaffung von Freiräumen für kreatives, disruptives Denken, kombi- niert mit wissenschaftlicher Analyse von bahnbrechender Lösungen. Denn nur mit Zeit und Raum für den interdisziplinären Austausch können neue ldeen entstehen und sich weiterentwickeln. Ein Schlüs- selelement für neues Denken am Bauhaus Luftfahrt waren Gruppen- designprojekte, bei denen das gesamte Team über drei bis vier Monate intensiv und agil an einer übergreifenden Fragestellung arbeitet. Dieser Ansatz hilft zudem, die Modellierungs- und Bewertungskom- petenzen weiterzuentwickeln, um der Luftfahrtbranche, der Politik und der Öffentlichkeit fundierte Empfehlungen geben zu können. Das Gründungsprinzip einer Public-private-Partnership mit solider Grund- finanzierung, kombiniert mit einem hoch motivierten und engagierten Team, hat sich als entscheidender Erfolgsfaktor des Bauhaus Luftfahrt erwiesen – des bis heute weltweit einzigen Thinktanks für die Luftfahrt.

Future Aviation Fuels 18 / 19 The research area Future Aviation Fuels addresses the following key questions: What quan- tities of renewable fuel can be produced in the future? Which technical production pathways are available for a long-term supply of renewable fuels? How do these pathways perform with respect to technical, environmental, and socioeconomic criteria? And what are suitable measures to introduce the required volumes of sustainable jet fuel into the market? Fuel options with promising long-term potentials, like advanced biofuels from residues and waste streams or synthetic fuels from solar and wind energy, represent important research topics in this context. Der Forschungsbereich Future Aviation Fuels konzentriert sich auf folgende Fragestellungen: In welchen Mengen können erneuerbare Kraftstoffe in Zukunft produziert werden? Welche technischen Produktionspfade stehen für eine langfristige Versorgung zur Verfügung? Wie sind diese Pfade im Hinblick auf ihre technischen, ökologischen und sozioökonomischen Potenziale zu bewerten? Und wie lassen sich die benötigten Mengen nachhaltiger Kraft- stoffe in den Markt einführen? Langfristig tragfähige Optionen, wie die Produktion fort- geschrittener Biokraftstoffe aus Abfall- und Reststoffen oder die Kraftstoffsynthese mittels Sonnen- und Windenergie, stellen hierzu wichtige Forschungsansätze dar.

Paving the path toward 100 % renewable fuels in aviation The transition to 100 % renewable fuels is essential to pave the way toward climate-neutral aviation. Specific to aviation are long product life cycles and the limitations of battery-electric flight. Drop-in capable sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) are required to realize a timely decarboni- zation of the global fleet. Bauhaus Luftfahrt identi- fied sustainability at scale, circularity, climate impact, and economic viability as major challen- ges of such a fundamental transition. While ini- tially bio-based fuels were in the focus of our research, their limitations led to a shift in focus toward renewable fuels of non-biological origin. For a comparison of a wide variety of fuel tech- nologies, a multiple-criteria assessment frame- work was developed with environmental impact and production cost as key indicators, among others. The scale of the future energy demand, fuel production potentials, the technological viability of fuel pathways, production capacity ramp-up, life-cycle quality, and various economic consider- ations were the subject of many assessments. Investigations of biofuel pathways pointed to a severe limitation of sustainable feedstock for first-generation biofuel production. Technologies for the conversion of advanced biogenic feed- stock can add significant fuel production poten- tials, but require continued research and devel- opment efforts to achieve commercial readiness. Early on, Bauhaus Luftfahrt researched the poten- tial of non-biogenic sustainable solutions, such as “green” hydrogen, sunlight-to-liquid or power-to- liquid technologies. Geo-referenced analyses of fuel production potentials showed their scalability beyond the future demand. For drop-in fuel pro- duction, direct air capture of CO2 needs to be developed due to the limited availability of bio- genic carbon sources. Renewable electricity from photovoltaic and wind power have great potential for use in aviation primarily via hydrogen in liquid form or in drop-in capable hydrocarbon fuels. In which form hydrogen will eventually be used best in aviation is subject of current research and will be linked to economic considerations and to the climate impact as a figure of merit. Die für die Luftfahrt typischen langen Produktlebenszyklen und Grenzen des batterie- elektrischen Flugs erfordern drop-in-fähige nachhaltige Flugkraftstoffe (SAF), um eine recht- zeitige Dekarbonisierung der globalen Flotte zu erreichen. Das Bauhaus Luftfahrt hat Nachhaltig- keit und Skalierbarkeit, Kreislauffähigkeit, Klima- auswirkungen und wirtschaftliche Tragfähigkeit als wesentliche Herausforderungen einer sol- chen grundlegenden Transformation identifiziert. Die Einschränkungen biobasierter Kraftstoffe führten zu einer Verlagerung des Forschungs- schwerpunkts auf erneuerbare Kraftstoffe nicht- biologischen Ursprungs. Für den Vergleich einer Vielzahl von Kraftstofftechnologien wurde ein Rahmen zur Bewertung nach mehreren Krite- rien entwickelt, der unter anderem die Umwelt- auswirkungen und die Produktionskosten als Schlüsselindikatoren berücksichtigt. Gegenstand zahlreicher Analysen waren der künftige Energiebedarf und die Kraftstoffpfade gemessen am Produktionspotenzial, an der technologischen Tragfähigkeit, am Hochlauf von Produktionskapazitäten, an der Lebenszyk- lusqualität und an verschiedenen wirtschaftli- chen Überlegungen. Untersuchungen von Bio- kraftstoffpfaden der ersten Generation wiesen auf eine starke Begrenzung nachhaltiger Roh- stoffe hin. Technologien für die Umwandlung fortschrittlicher biogener Rohstoffe können ein erhebliches Kraftstoff-Produktionspotenzial bie- ten, erfordern jedoch weitere Forschungs- und Entwicklungsanstrengungen, um die Marktreife zu erreichen. Das Bauhaus Luftfahrt erforschte schon früh das Potenzial nichtbiogener nachhaltiger Lösungen wie „grünen“ Wasserstoff, Sunlight-to-Liquid- oder Power-to-Liquid-Technologien. Georeferen- zierte Analysen der Kraftstoff-Produktionspoten- ziale zeigten deren Skalierbarkeit über den zukünftigen Bedarf hinaus. Für die Drop-in-Kraft- stoffproduktion muss aufgrund der begrenzten Verfügbarkeit von biogenen Kohlenstoffquellen die direkte Abscheidung von CO2 aus der Luft entwickelt werden. Erneuerbarer Strom aus Photovoltaik und Windkraft hat ein großes Potenzial, vor allem als Wasserstoff in flüssiger Form oder als drop-in-fähiger Kohlenwasser- stoff. The European Green Deal aims at a 90 % reduc- tion in transport emissions to achieve climate neutrality by 2050. To this end, sustainable avia- tion fuels (SAFs) are essential. The EU / SERI-fund- ed project SUN-to-LIQUID II addresses this challenge with solar-thermochemical technology that has the potential to produce sustainable and cost-effective fuels at the scale of future demand directly from concentrated sunlight, water, and CO2. Bauhaus Luftfahrt is coordinator and research partner in the consortium of three research organisations, two SMEs, and one industry partner from five European countries. SUN-to-LIQUID II: Sustainable aviation fuel from sunlight and air This project builds on the achievements of its predecessors SOLAR-JET and SUN-to-LIQUID. SUN-to-LIQUID II aims to demonstrate the via- bility of the integrated solar fuel pathway on a 50-kW scale. The primary objective is to achieve a record-high solar-to-syngas energy conversion of 15 % by bringing novel concepts and lab-scale developments (technology readiness level TRL 2 – 3) to the field (TRL 4 – 5). The project aims to optimize the high-flux solar concentrating helio- stat and tower system, develop and integrate novel 3D-structured reactants, and implement high-temperature heat recovery. Future scale-up is investigated by detailed system analyses that will create a conceptual design of a next-genera- tion commercial multi-megawatt-scale solar plant to evaluate life-cycle emissions, cost, and commercial viability. As a result, SUN-to-LIQUID II should provide significant progress and a clear roadmap toward cost-effective and deep greenhouse gas emis- sion reduction potential especially for aviation, with technical scalability beyond projected future demand. Dies erfordert eine Transformation der bestehenden Kraftstoff- landschaft, wie den Aufbau neuer oder die Anpassung bestehender Infrastruktur. Zudem führen Subquoten für synthetische Kraftstoffe zu einer Diskussion über optimierte „Power-to-X (PtX)“-Pfade, Standorte und Importoptionen. Sustainable fuel supply at Bavarian airports: Import options for PtX products Fuel suppliers to European Union airports are mandated to meet ReFuelEU Aviation quotas for sustainable aviation fuels increasing from 2 % in 2025 to 70 % by 2050. This necessitates a trans- formation of the fuel production landscape, with new infrastructure emerging and repurposing of existing infrastructure. In addition, sub-quotas for synthetic fuels are prompting discussion about optimized power-to-x (PtX) production pathways, sites, and import options. Bauhaus Luftfahrt compared three distinct import options: hydrogen, methanol, and syn- thetic kerosene. Methanol and kerosene can be easily transported over long distances, while importing hydrogen via pipeline may also be via- ble if costs are shared by different sectors. The SouthH2 Corridor pipeline project, scheduled to commence operation by 2030, may represent a pivotal development for Bavarian refineries. It will be part of the European Hydrogen Backbone and extends from Tunisia via Italy and Austria to refinery sites in Burghausen and Ingolstadt. The entry point in Tunisia was selected as the com- mon production site; if hydrogen and methanol are imported, kerosene synthesis is assumed to take place in Bavaria via methanol-to-jet (MtJ) conversion. Finally, the production costs of dif- ferent scenarios were analyzed. The comparison indicates that synthetic kero- sene or methanol import results in lower fuel provision costs if suitable CO2 point sources are available, due to favorable wind and solar resources in Tunisia. However, if CO2 in Tunisia needs to be supplied by direct air capture, hydro- gen import via pipeline and utilization of Bavarian CO2 point sources may be more cost-efficient. Hydrogen Aviation 30 / 31 A holistic assessment of hydrogen as an aviation fuel is a central aim of Bauhaus Luftfahrt’s research activities. In this context, production processes and logistic chains are analyzed in order to gauge their scalability and their ecological and economic performance. These assess- ments extend to the required hydrogen-handling infrastructure and related adaptions of air- port procedures. Further, key enabling component technologies for hydrogen-powered energy and propulsion systems are conceptually investigated. Aircraft- integrated analysis sheds light on synergies. All learnings contribute to a refined understanding of the potential role of hydro- gen with regard to aviation’s long-term target of climate neutrality. Die ganzheitliche Bewertung von Wasserstoff als Luftfahrtkraftstoff ist ein zentrales Ziel der Forschungsaktivitäten des Bauhaus Luftfahrt. The emergence of liquid hydrogen (LH2) as a potential aviation fuel presents significant chal- lenges and opportunities for civil aviation air- craft design. Aircraft configurations: In addition to regional and short-to-medium range aircraft, research increasingly supports the feasibility of long- range aircraft using LH2. LH2 aircraft configura- tions demand careful consideration of tank place- ment and center of gravity shifts during flight. Wing: The use of LH2 introduces new require- ments for wings. The aeroelastic analyses must extend beyond only omitting the fuel weight and encompass dynamic cases such as flutter and reduced loads during taxiing. Storing a share of LH2 within the wing, as explored in the LuFo CHoSe project, might offer potential for large aircraft. Current progress and challenges in LH2 aircraft Propulsion concepts: Regarding the propulsion system, LH2 combustion in turbofans appears feasible, while fuel cell technology for large air- craft faces challenges in achieving sufficient power-to-weight ratios. While the economic conditions required for the feasibility of LH2 aircraft are still subject to a high degree of uncertainty, the technical maturity is steadily increasing thanks to numerous research projects like HOPE, HYLENA, HyKlik, 328H2-FC, H2Avia, CHoSe, DWiTE, and Hy-ShAir. Die Integration von H2-betriebenen Brennstoffzellen (BSZ) neben konventionellen, mit nachhaltigem Kraftstoff (SAF) betrieben Turbotriebwerken bildet das Herzstück des Antriebssystems. Sensitivitäten auf Flugzeugebene und diverse Hybridisierungsstrategien wurden analysiert, um Wechselwirkungen, Leistungspotenzial und Gren- zen von Parameteränderungen zu bewerten. Durch die Aktivierung der BSZ-Unterstützung während des Reservesteigflugs zusätzlich zur Auslegungsmission erreicht die SAF-Reduktion aller untersuchten Entwürfe einen Spitzen- wert von 25,4 %. Dies geht jedoch auf Kosten einer um 23,4 % verringerten Nutzlast, um den schwereren Antriebsstrang (+ 48,7 %) einset- zen zu können. Dieser ist erforderlich, um den entsprechenden BSZ-Leistungsanteil (SP) von 35 % zu erreichen. Aufgrund des allgemein geringen Kraftstoff- anteils der D328eco bilden SP-Werte von 20 bis 40 % den Bereich des größten Nutzens. Design studies for a hydrogen-hybrid regional aircraft retrofit This research presents an exploration of a regional aircraft retrofit featuring a parallel-hy- brid dual-fuel powertrain specifically tailored to the D328eco aircraft. The integration of hydro- gen-powered fuel cells (FC) alongside conven- tional turboshaft engines burning sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) forms the core of the propul- sion system. The exploration delves into aircraft-level sensitiv- ities and multiple hybridization strategies to assess the interactions, performance improve- ment potential, and limitations of parameter changes. By enabling FC support during the diversion climb in addition to the design mission segments, the total SAF savings of all investigat- ed designs peaked at 25.4 %. However, this comes at the cost of a 23.4 % payload reduc- tion to be able to incorporate the heavier power- train (+ 48.7 %) required to realize the corre- sponding design power split (SP) of 35 %. Due to the low fuel fraction of the D328eco, it can be stated that SP values of 20 – 40 % form the zone of the greatest benefit. At lower val- ues, the effort of hybridization is in poor propor- tion to the achievable environmental benefit, while higher values result in an unbalanced cost-efficiency due to the large payload reduc- tion required. The findings indicate that hybrid retrofits can play a role in reducing the environmental foot- print of existing aircraft fleets. This approach not only supports the transition toward a more sustainable aviation but also exploits the rea- sonable use of existing airframe resources, thereby mitigating the need for new aircraft production and further reducing the overall car- bon footprint of the aviation industry. Yearbook / Jahrbuch 2024 Hydrogen demand and infrastructure in aviation The interdependence between liquid hydrogen (LH2) supply and demand in aviation represents a major challenge. Without sufficient LH2 demand from hydrogen-powered aircraft, investments in the infrastructure necessary to supply hydrogen to airports may seem economically unviable. Conversely, delays in developing the LH2 supply chain could discourage airlines from adopting hydrogen-powered aircraft. To address this issue, Bauhaus Luftfahrt explores how hydrogen infrastructure deployment at air- ports influences the evolution of future fleets and networks. Therefore, a scenario-based approach is applied within the in-house Air Trans- port System (ATS) modeling framework. Each scenario is defined by a set of key impact param- eters, which are incorporated into the modeling framework through additional modules. Addi- tionally, airports are clustered based on varia- tions in flight volume, LH2 demand growth, infrastructure availability, cost reduction poten- tial (driven by economies of scale), fleet transi- tion capacity, and policy incentives. In this way, dependencies between fleet decisions, hydro- gen supply and demand, and infrastructure read- iness can be captured, while potential transition scenarios are evaluated. Airlines depend on reliable LH2 infrastructure to integrate hydrogen-powered aircraft into their operations. The availability and scalability of refueling facilities at key airports will influence fleet deployment and route planning. Coordinat- ed investment in airport infrastructure, aligned with airline fleet strategies, is essential to ena- ble a stable transition. In order to quantitatively analyze and assess future technolo- gies, a specially developed methodology based on scientific principles is used. As guidance to the future development of sound overall concepts, performance potentials are deter- mined in the aeronautical context at various levels of complexity. Two decades of Technology Radar – antenna for signals of innovation potentials The Technology Radar was established for early identification of research breakthroughs in a broad technology spectrum, including materials, energy, information, and sensors. Using scientific methods and an interdisciplinary team, it evalu- ates long-term potentials for aviation innovation to guide the development of sound overall con- cepts. Key success factors included anticipating future demands – such as integrating perfor- mance optimization with sustainability goals like the transition to renewable resources and climate neutrality – and aligning these needs with emerg- ing technologies assessed through forward-look- ing metrics to identify step-change advances. materials Materials Early studies of bio-derived com- posites for light aircraft structures made from renewable materials, conducted a decade ago and now gaining trac- tion, revealed their potential to reduce weight, improve fuel efficiency, lower life-cycle emis- sions, and enhance supply chain stability by decreasing fossil resource dependence. Fos- tered by earlier analyses on material criticalities and supply risks – now gaining more attention – this recognition exemplifies the timely identifica- tion of multi-faceted, future-oriented innovation potentials. energy systems Energy systems Anticipating the necessary transi- tion to rene wable energy initiated early evaluation of electrochemi- cal technologies as key enablers of zero-emis- sion propulsion. Since 2009, fuel cell analyses have demonstrated a trajectory toward higher performance and scalability for larger aircraft (cf. Figure p. 46). Advances in materials and designs supporting higher operating temperatures in polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFCs) address durability challenges and facilitate thermal and water management, allowing for system-level advantages (cf. next article). In 2013, early analyses explored enhancing the efficiency benefits of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) – operating at far higher temperatures than PEFCs – by utilizing their waste heat in gas turbines (GT) within SOFC-GT hybrids to increase overall power output. For identifying favorable business models, sta- tistical frameworks have been developed to link technical and economic metrics with decision risks under uncertainty. Monte Carlo methods now support climate impact assessments, including non-CO2 effects, to enable robust tech- nology roadmapping. Early evaluation of future technologies – some implemented at industrial scale, others advanc- ing – has guided integrated concepts and support- ed strategic decisions for stakeholders, empha- sizing technology diversity, convergence, and digitalization as drivers of climate-neutral aviation. Bauhaus Luftfahrt analyzed the key technology advances and improvement potentials of HT-PEFCs. Their higher operating temperature, ranging from 120 °C to 200 °C, enables efficient heat dissipation and enhanced energy recovery, allowing a more effective and lighter thermal management system. Furthermore, operating at higher temperatures enhances reaction kinet- ics and improves tolerance toward contami- nants (e. g. CO, H2S). Proton conduction is typically achieved via poly- benzimidazole (PBI) polymer membrane doped with phosphoric acid (PA). This allows the use of dry gases, eliminating the need for a humidifica- tion system and thereby reducing the overall system weight and complexity. Although PBI-PA membranes offer great benefits, they encounter challenges such as acid leaching in the presence of liquid water and reduced mechanical strength caused by the excessive doping, which reduces the durability and the electrode power density. Despite these drawbacks, significant advance- ments over the past decade have addressed these issues (e.g. membrane electrode assem- bly (MEA)), allowing operation over a wide range of conditions. This progress positions HT-PEFC as a promising candidate for powering next-gen- eration aircraft. Novel Propulsion Concepts 52 / 53 Advanced propulsion systems have become a key driver in overall aircraft design integration. This research area is dedicated to the development and initial evaluation of ultra-efficient and potentially disruptive concepts for future sustainable aero propulsion systems. Therefore, tech- nological developments with high relevance to propulsion systems are constantly monitored and advanced alternative propulsion and power system configurations are conceived with a high level of technical creativity. Based on rigorous initial concept assessments, methodolog- ical enhancements for propulsion system predesign and performance synthesis are progressed and recommendations for further research and development are formulated. For the transition to 100 % renewable energy in aviation, outside-the-box options have been con- sidered. Electric propulsion is of particular inter- est for zero in-flight emissions, as it promises to protect the global climate and the local air quali- ty at airports. Our early analyses focused on the gravimetric exergy density – not energy density – as a key metric for a quantitative com- parison of different energy carriers for range, and power density for take-off. Realizing the significance of exergy density put the promising scientific breakthroughs in battery technology into proper perspective in comparison to kero- sene-powered aircraft. Pursuing the vision of zero in-flight emission propulsion In 2011, our entire team embarked on its first Group Design Project – an interdisciplinary activ- ity involving all of Bauhaus Luftfahrt’s scientific competences – with an ambitious mission statement: “Perform the conceptual design and initial technical assessment of a short-range air- craft application featuring electro-motive sys- tems.” The goal was to obtain a comprehensive first picture of a possible future in electrically powered aviation. Technological prospects were paired with conceptual system design and investigated in a holistic context including oper- ations and life cycle. A key artifact of the acti- vity was the Ce-Liner which became one of Bauhaus Luftfahrt’s signature concept planes. The learnings from the studies around Ce-Liner still resonate today: Battery-electric propulsion systems would provide the highest overall effi- ciency and climate impact reduction. But even with significant technological advances, the limited specific exergy of batteries will prevent pure battery-electric flight from having a signif- icant impact on commercial transport aviation. Battery-based hybrid-electric propulsion will not be able to change the picture fundamentally. Being better suited as a high-power source, batteries in the meantime have been enabling zero-emission flight in the niche of regional air mobility. Elektrische Antriebe sind durch ihre Emis- sionsfreiheit im Flug von besonderem Interesse für den Schutz des globalen Klimas und der lokalen Luftqualität an Flughäfen. Unsere ersten Analysen konzentrierten sich sowohl auf die gravimetrische Exergiedichte – nicht Energie- dichte – als Schlüsselgröße für einen quantitati- ven Vergleich verschiedener Energieträger in Bezug auf die Reichweite als auch auf die erfor- derliche Leistungsdichte beim Start. Die Erkenntnis der Bedeutung der Exergiedichte rückte die vielversprechenden wissenschaftli- chen Durchbrüche in der Batterietechnologie im Vergleich zu kerosinbetriebenen Flugzeugen in die richtige Perspektive. 2011 initiierte unser Team sein erstes Grup- pendesignprojekt, das alle Kompetenzen am Bauhaus Luftfahrt interdisziplinär einbezog. Die Aufgabenstellung: „Durch führung des konzep- tionellen Entwurfs und der ersten technischen Bewertung einer Kurzstreckenflugzeugan- wendung mit rein elektrischem Antrieb“. Ziel war ein erstes umfassendes Bild von einer möglichen Zukunft der elektrisch angetriebe- nen Luftfahrt. Technologische Perspektiven wurden mit dem konzeptionellen Systemde- sign gekoppelt und in einem ganzheitlichen Kontext einschließlich Betrieb und Lebenszyk- lus untersucht. Wesentliches Ergebnis: der Ce-Liner, eines der charakteristischen Konzept- flugzeuge des Bauhaus Luftfahrt. Die Erkenntnisse aus den Studien gelten noch heute: Batterieelektrische Antriebssysteme würden die höchste Gesamteffizienz und die geringsten Klimaauswirkungen bieten. Doch selbst bei erheblichen technologischen Fort- schritten wird die limitierte spezifische Exergie von Batterien nur sehr begrenzte emissions- freie Reichweiten ermöglichen und damit den größten Teil der kommerziellen Luftfahrt nicht bedienen können. Auch batteriegestützte Hy bridantriebe können diese Situation nicht grundlegend ändern. Batterien sind vielmehr als Hochleistungsquelle geeignet und ermögli- chen emissionsfreies Fliegen in der Nische der regionalen Luftmobilität. Da der größte Teil der erneuerbaren Energie aus Photovoltaik, Wind- und Wasserkraft stammt, werden indes auch ergänzende Pfade zur Nut- zung von Elektrizität beschritten: in erster Linie über Wasserstoff – in flüssiger Form oder che- misch gebunden in kerosinähnlichen Kohlen- wasserstoffen.

The idea of distributing the propulsive thrust The need for ever higher propulsive efﬁciencies is driving the stronger integration of propulsion and airframe. From its ﬁrst steps, the propul- sion research of Bauhaus Luftfahrt subscribed to revolutionary design approaches that go clearly beyond just simply increasing fan diam- eters. The distribution of propulsive thrust across the main components of the airframe has been a central idea behind many signature concepts produced over the course of time. While enabling ultra-high propulsive efficiency, distributed thrust may lift functional synergies between propulsion and airframe through structural load alleviation, improved reliability by intrinsic redundancy, improved noise shield- ing, enhanced control authority, improved high- lift capability, or even improved aerodynamic efficiency. The Claire Liner – a concept first presented at ILA Berlin Air Show 2008 – captured a variety of such ideas for a future megacity airliner. Acknowledging the trends of large population and economic growth as well as the increasing urbanization and rising demand for mobility – for example in Asia – the Claire Liner was conceived as a “people mover” to transport large numbers of passengers over short distances. Unlike the initial concept sketches with wing-distributed fans, the Claire Liner featured a still mechanical- ly distributed propulsion system installed at the aft-fuselage. Combined with novel wing and fuselage arrangements, the multi-fan propulsive device, driven by advanced heat engines embed- ded in the aft-fuselage, was designed for the purpose of boundary layer ingestion (BLI). Following the Claire Liner, the idea of distributed propulsion with fuselage BLI was developed into the most impactful Propulsive Fuselage Concept (PFC) with electrically powered aft-fan for which the proof-of-concept was completed in the EU project CENTRELINE. In a PFC config- uration, fuselage-distributed propulsion not only offers excellent compatibility with ultra-efficient wing and core engine technology but also repre- sents a highly effective means to mitigate the performance penalties intrinsic to hydrogen- fueled aircraft, especially in the long range. Yearbook / Jahrbuch 2024 Hybridisierungspotenzial eines Antriebssystems mit elektrischem Verdichterantrieb In vielen Studien zu hybrid-elektrischen Antrie- ben ﬁnden die Auswirkungen der Hybridisierung auf das Betriebsverhalten des Triebwerks zu wenig Berücksichtigung. Um diesen Effekt zu untersuchen, wird im LuFo-Projekt HybVer (Hy bri- disierte Verdichterkonzepte) ein zyklusintegrier- tes Parallelhy bridkonzept untersucht, bei dem sowohl die Hochdruckwelle unterstützt als auch einzelne Verdichterstufen elektrisch ange- trieben werden. Da die elektrische Energie aus Batterien gespeist wird, konzentrieren sich die Studien in HybVer auf regionale Turboprops und mittelgroße Hubschrauber. Nach der Auswahl eines geeigneten Grundkonzepts wurden beide Antriebe für die Designmission dimensioniert, wobei die wichtigsten Zyklusparameter auf einen Hybridisierungsgrad (HP.des) von 20 % (Hub- schrauber) bzw. HP,des= 11 % (Regionalflieger) optimiert wurden. Da die meisten Flugzeuge weit unter ihrer eigentlichen Designreichweite betrieben wer- den, können bei kürzeren Strecken höhere Hy - bridisierungsgrade und ein besserer Kraftstoff- verbrauch erreicht werden, wenn die installierte elektrische Speicherkapazität voll genutzt wird. Die aktuelle Studie liefert neue Erkenntnisse über die maximal zulässigen Hybridisierungsgrade unter Berücksichtigung der Betriebsgrenzen der Turbokomponenten. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass im Reiseflug ein maximaler Hybridisie- rungsgrad von 40 % (Hubschrauber) bzw. 31 % (Regionalflieger) erreicht werden kann. Vergli- chen mit der Designmission bedeutet dies eine erhebliche Reduzierung der CO2- und NOx-Emis- sionen auf kürzeren Strecken und ermöglicht eine optimierte Auslegung des Antriebssys- tems für das gesamte Einsatzspektrum des Fluggeräts. Hybridization potential of a propulsion system with compressor electric drive Most studies on hybrid-electric propulsion neglect the impact of hybridization on the opera- tional behavior of the propulsion system. To inves- tigate this effect, the LuFo project HybVer (hybrid- ized compressor concepts) examines a cycle-in- tegrated parallel hybrid propulsion concept, with electrical assistance from the high-pressure spool combined with an electric drive of individu- al compressor stages. Assuming on-board batter- ies to supply the electric energy, the studies in HybVer focus on regional turboprop and mid-size helicopter applications. A feasible system layout having been selected, the propulsion system was sized for the design mission, optimizing key cycle parameters toward a hybridization degree (HP,des) of 20 % for the helicopter and HP,des= 11 % for the regional application. As most aircraft are operated far below their actual design range, higher degrees of hybridiza- tion and improved fuel burn can be achieved on shorter missions when fully utilizing the installed electrical storage capacity. The recent perfor- mance investigation provides new insights into the maximum hybridization levels allowable under consideration of the operational limits of the turbo components involved. The results show that for the helicopter application, a maxi- mum hybridization degree of 40 % during cruise conditions could be achieved. For the regional turboprop application, a maximum hybridization degree of 31 % is possible. Compared to the design mission, this means signiﬁcant CO2 and NOx emission reductions on shorter stage lengths, enabling an optimized propulsion sys- tem sizing for the entire operating spectrum of the aircraft. Yearbook / Jahrbuch 2024 Insights into advanced fuel cell-gas turbine hybrid propulsion Advanced hydrogen fuel cell (FC) technology is emerging as a possible competitor to gas tur- bine (GT) engines in the low power classes of aircraft propulsion. With GT technology remain- ing the backbone of advanced propulsion sys- tems for large aircraft, FC technology could be the key to unlocking significant emissions reductions also for these large-volume market segments. Therefore, researchers at Bauhaus Luftfahrt are exploring promising combinations of FC and GT technology. Here, three levels of systemic inte- gration can be distinguished: a simple, discrete parallel system using only the electrical power output of the FC (Level 1); a water-integrated system in which the FC product water is also harvested in order to augment GT performance and drastically reduce NOx emissions (Level 2); and a fully GT-cycle-integrated arrangement aim- ing at full utilization of the FCs’ thermal energy output (Level 3). In all cases, the FC electric power output can be utilized to serve various on-board customers. Depending on the FC size, scenarios ranging from merely supplying the vehicle’s all-electric subsystems to a radical single GT propulsion system seem conceivable. Pre-conceptual analyses show that single GT propulsion might be attractive for short-to-me- dium range aircraft. Hybrid power systems with an FC powering an aft-fuselage boundary layer ingesting fan could be highly efficient in the long range. High temperature solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) technology is particularly suitable for FC-GT hybrids. This has been identified for water-integrated systems (see initial assess- ment study discussed in the Bauhaus Luftfahrt Yearbook 2021), but is also the case for GT cycle-integrated FC systems. Combining SOFC technology with on-board fuel reforming may even unlock sustainable aviation fuels for FC-GT hybrid propulsion. Die GT-Technologie bildet nach wie vor das Rückgrat fortschritt- licher Antriebssysteme für Großflugzeuge. Die BZ-Technologie könnte jedoch auch in diesen großvolumigen Marktsegmenten der Schlüssel zu deutlichen Emissionsreduktionen sein. Daher untersuchen die Forscher*innen des Bauhaus Luftfahrt aktuell vielversprechende Kombinationen aus BZ- und GT-Technologie. Hierbei lassen sich drei Stufen der Systeminteg- ration unterscheiden: ein einfaches, diskretes Parallelsystem, das lediglich die elektrische Leis- tung der BZ nutzt (Stufe 1), ein wasserintegrier- tes System, bei dem auch das Produktwasser der BZ eingesetzt wird, um die GT-Leistung zu erhöhen und die NOx-Emissionen drastisch zu senken (Stufe 2), und eine vollständig in den GT- Zyklus integrierte Anordnung, die auf eine voll- ständige Nutzung der thermischen Energie der BZ abzielt (Stufe 3). In allen Fällen kann die elektrische Leistung der BZ genutzt werden, um verschiedene Verbrau- cher an Bord zu versorgen. Je nach Größe der BZ sind Szenarien denkbar, die von einer reinen Versorgung der vollelektrischen Subsysteme des Fluggeräts bis hin zu einem radikalen Antriebs- system mit einer einzigen GT reichen. Erste Analysen zeigen: Ein Antrieb mit nur einer GT könnte für Flugzeuge im Kurz- / Mittelstre- ckensegment attraktiv sein. Hybride Antriebs- systeme, bei denen die BZ einen grenzschicht- einsaugenden Rumpffan antreibt, könnten auf der Langstrecke hocheffizient sein. Bei hoher Temperatur betriebene Festoxid-Brennstoffzellen (SOFC) sind für BZ-GT-Hybridsysteme besonders geeignet. Dies wurde für wasserintegrierte Sys- teme gezeigt (siehe Studie zur Erstbewertung im Bauhaus Luftfahrt Jahrbuch 2021), gilt aber auch für GT-Zyklus-integrierte Varianten. Urban & Regional (Air) Mobility 68 / 69 A new generation of fully electric-powered air vehicles en ables completely new air mobility systems, which provide an additional option for urban and regional short-range transport. To fully understand the potential of such air solutions, the required ecosystem of stakeholders, such as users, vehicle manufacturers, vertiport and vehicle operators, authorities, govern- ments, and societies, must be considered holistically and the benefits of adding them to exist- ing transport systems must be analyzed. To what extent conventional aviation can benefit from these developments in the area of technologies, processes at the vertiports, flight manage- ment, regulations, certification, market actors, and business models is the subject of our ongo- ing research. Inwieweit die konventionelle Luftfahrt von diesen Entwicklungen in den Bereichen Technologien, Prozesse, Luftraum- management, Regularien, Zulassung, Marktakteure und Geschäftsmodelle profitieren kann, ist Gegenstand unserer laufenden Forschung.

Ebenso wichtig ist es jedoch, die finanzielle Tragfähigkeit sicherzustellen. Ein entscheidender Faktor bei der Finanzplanung von UAM-Diensten sind die Landegebühren. Diese können mithilfe eines Wirtschaftsmodells berechnet werden, das Kapi- talausgaben (CAPEX), Betriebsausgaben (OPEX) und Betriebsparameter berücksichtigt. Unsere Analyse der CAPEX und OPEX für ver- schiedene Vertiport-Konfigurationen zeigt, dass kleinere Vertiports nicht von Skaleneffekten pro- fitieren. Viele der Infrastrukturkosten, wie z. B. die Kosten für den Terminalbau, sind fix und sinken nicht proportional zur Größe. Das führt zu höheren Landegebühren für kleinere Vertiports. Außerdem führen längere Abfertigungszeiten für elektrisch angetriebene, senkrecht star- tende Fluggeräte (eVTOLs) zu einer geringeren Auslastung der Infrastruktur und limitieren die Zahl der im gleichen Zeitraum abgefertigten Flug- zeuge. Um mehr als eine reine Kostendeckung von Vertiports zu erzielen, sind innovative Geschäfts- modelle notwendig. Mithilfe der Methodik des St. Gallener Business Model Navigators wurden drei potenzielle Modelle ermittelt: Das Dynamic Vertiport Service Pricing erzielt durch definierte Servicelevels Flexibilität; der digitale eVTOL-Pool vergleicht verschiedene Reiseoptionen und shAIRport untersucht das dezentrale Eigentum an Vertiports. Da sich dieser Markt noch im Anfangsstadium befindet, ist es schwierig, künftige Bedürfnisse vollständig vorherzusehen. Deshalb ist Anpas- sungsfähigkeit eine Schlüsselkomponente jedes erfolgreichen Geschäftsmodells. In der Weiter- entwicklung von UAM wird es entscheidend sein, sich schnell an Technologie- und Marktver- änderungen anpassen zu können und so die Rentabilität sicherzustellen. A crucial factor in the financial planning of UAM services is landing fees, which can be calculated using an econom- ic model that takes into consideration the capital expenditures (CAPEX), the operational expendi- tures (OPEX), and operational parameters. Urban air mobility for airport access Our analysis of CAPEX and OPEX for different vertiport configurations shows that smaller vertiports do not benefit from economies of scale. Many of the infrastructure costs, like those for terminal construction, are fixed and do not decrease proportionally with the size, lead- ing to higher landing fees for smaller vertiports. Additionally, longer turnaround times for elec- tric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft reduce the utilization rate of the infrastructure, limiting the number of aircraft served in the same period. To go beyond merely covering vertiport costs, innovative business models are necessary. Using the St. Gallen Business Model Navigator methodology, three potential models emerged: Dynamic Vertiport Service Pricing, which intro- duces flexibility through service-level defini- tions; eVTOL Pool, a digital application for comparing different travel options; and shAIR- port, which explores decentralized ownership of vertiports. Given the nascent stage of this market, fully anticipating future needs is challenging, making adaptability a key component of any successful business model. Bauhaus Luftfahrt has therefore focused on rethinking operational concepts, aiming to optimize the air transport system while address- ing environmental, economic, and social chal- lenges. Two central pathways have emerged: decentralization of air transport networks and innovative aircraft-sharing models. The concept of ”CentAirStation“ and ”Citybird“ explores the potential of decentralized air trans- port systems by introducing smaller, inner-city airports that complement existing airports. This concept fosters direct connections, reducing travel times while alleviating airport congestion through additional capacities. This approach could enhance passenger convenience and net- work resilience, while optimizing the integration of air transport with urban mobility systems. The concept has regained relevance with Regional Air Mobility and fully electric aviation. In addition, bundled passenger flows and shared aircraft utilization across airlines enable a more sustainable use of existing assets, reducing operational inefficiencies and lowering per-flight emissions. Operational concepts play a vital yet under-researched role in achieving climate-neu- tral aviation. The integration of digital technologies, enhanced multimodality, and decentralized systems offers a pathway to reducing emissions while maintain- ing service quality. Bauhaus Luftfahrt’s research demonstrates the transformative potential of rethinking aviation networks, positioning opera- tional innovation as a cornerstone of sustainable air transport. Transition to Climate Neutrality 74 / 75 The research area Transition to Climate Neutrality focuses on the following research questions: Which pathways can lead aviation to CO2 neutrality by 2050? Which emission mitigation options show the best performance in terms of reduction potential, costs, and entry into ser- vice? How can synergies between different mitigation options be maximised? And finally, how do changing ticket prices and an increasing environmental awareness among passengers affect the future demand trends in air travel? In light of such complex dynamics, scenario simulations are among the preferred methods to better understand the underlying mecha- nisms and clearly show implications of different scenario outcomes. Um langfristig die richtigen Entscheidungen trotz großer Unsicherheit tref- fen zu können, haben sich szenariobasierte Methoden als wertvolles Werkzeug etabliert. Mithilfe plausibler Zukunftsbilder können diese Szenarien Orientierung schaffen und strategi- sche Entscheidungen ableiten. Am Bauhaus Luftfahrt entstanden in enger Kooperation mit der Technischen Universität München, Airbus und dem Flughafen Mün- chen in den letzten 16 Jahren Szenarien zu zentralen Treibern wie Nachhaltigkeit, alterna- tiven Treibstoffen, Digitalisierung oder alternder Bevölkerung. Solche Szenarien veranschauli- chen zukünftige Entwicklungen und ermögli- chen es Unternehmen, technologische Kon- zepte systematisch zu bewerten und auf ihre wirtschaftliche und gesellschaftliche Tragfä- higkeit zu untersuchen. Dabei stehen die nachhaltige Transformation der Branche und die Erschließung neuer Geschäftsfelder im Mittelpunkt. Der struktu- rierte Szenarioprozess beginnt mit der Pro- blemdefinition und Umfeldanalyse, gefolgt von Konsistenzprüfungen und der Entwicklung von Storyboards. Implikationsanalysen liefern kon- krete Handlungsempfehlungen für strategische Entscheidungen. With the help of plausible future scenarios, these methods can provide guidance and sup- port the derivation of strategic decisions. Robust strategic decisions in aviation At Bauhaus Luftfahrt, in close cooperation with the Technical University of Munich, Airbus, and Munich Airport, scenarios addressing key drivers such as sustainability, alternative fuels, digitali- zation, and an aging population have been devel- oped over the past 16 years. These scenarios illustrate future developments and enable com- panies to systematically evaluate technological concepts and assess their economic and soci- etal feasibility. The focus is on the sustainable transformation of industry and the exploration of new business opportunities. The structured scenario process begins with problem definition and environmental analysis, followed by consistency checks and the devel- opment of storyboards. Implication analyses provide concrete recommendations for strategic decisions. Bauhaus Luftfahrt demonstrates that plausible future scenarios are more than just visions: they are the key to resilient strategies, enhance com- panies’ decision-making capabilities, and contrib- ute to shaping the transformation of the industry in a sustainable, innovative, and robust manner. Role of multimodality In 2024, Bauhaus Luftfahrt and its partners advanced the understanding of multimodality, with a particular emphasis on integrating air, rail, and urban and regional air mobility (UAM- RAM) to foster a more sustainable and intercon- nected future. One of the first projects was the UAM-RAM ini- tiative, funded by the Bavarian Ministry of Eco- nomic Affairs, Regional Development and Ener- gy. This project explored how air mobility could complement ground transportation – particularly in remote areas – by improving connectivity and supporting the development of more efficient booking systems. Building on this vision, the now-completed MODUS project, co-funded by the European Union, tackled one of the biggest challenges: creating a truly interconnected transport net- work. By demonstrating how shifting 2 to 3 % of air traffic on short routes to high-speed rail could reduce delays and emissions, MODUS provided a clear path toward efficient, door-to- door travel. The research predicts that by 2040, factors like regulations, journey planning, and booking systems will be both crucial and achiev- able, while green travel and accessibility, though important, may be less feasible. Another recently completed project focused on a study of passenger demand, examining shifts in travel behaviors, demographics, and prefer- ences. The findings offered valuable insights that align with the Flightpath 2050 goal of ena- bling four-hour, door-to-door journeys across Europe. The research highlights that trends such as urbanization, technological adoption, demographic shifts, and changes in education, mobility, and household patterns will signifi- cantly shape Europe by 2050. This study was funded by the European Union. The ongoing MultiModX project, co-funded by the European Union, builds on previous initia- tives by focusing on optimizing air-rail integra- tion. Among other solutions, it is developing a decision-making tool to enhance the coordina- tion of rail and air schedules through iterative path assignment. Yearbook / Jahrbuch 2024 In the ﬁscal year 2024, Bauhaus Luftfahrt’s earnings increased by 12.5 % to 5.9 million EUR. Grants from the Free State of Bavaria increased from 1.58 million EUR to 1.75 million EUR. The membership fees remain stable at 1.1 mil- lion EUR. Revenues from public-funded third-party pro- jects increased by 578 kEUR (+ 50 %) to 2.1 mil- lion EUR in 2024. These earnings are attributable to work on 18 research projects funded by the European Union, the German Federal Govern- ment or the Free State of Bavaria. The increase is primarily due to the start of four new projects and the expansion of work on existing projects in 2024. The project revenues with our industrial part- ners decreased by 31 % (- 300 kEUR) due to an industrial partner leaving a project funded by the German Federal Government in which Bau- haus Luftfahrt was involved as a subcontractor. Release of accounting provisions and other com- pany earnings generated 302 kEUR in revenue. For the year 2025 Bauhaus Luftfahrt expects earnings to be slightly above 5.9 million EUR. This constant income will be mainly due to reve- nues from public-funded third-party projects, resulting from Bauhaus Luftfahrt’s immense success in project acquisitions (7 EU projects, 13 projects funded by the German Federal Gov- ernment or Bavaria). Personnel Personal Facts and Figures 84 / 85 The number of employees increased slightly in 2024 compared to the previous year. At the end of the year, Bauhaus Luftfahrt had 49 employ- ees, 37 of whom were scientists, with 11 being post-doctoral researchers. The share of female scientists in 2024 was 21 %, and the share of women overall was 34 %. The number of students also increased slightly. 14 students from a total of 11 nations worked as research assistants and interns or on their stu- dent research projects and theses. In total, 79 people from 18 nations were employed at Bauhaus Luftfahrt in 2024. Bauhaus Luftfahrt continues to make considera- ble efforts to recruit highly qualified graduates and scientists from various disciplines to ensure we can provide a high level of scientific research activity.
