Solar kerosene has successfully demonstrated its potential contribution to sustainable aviation. But will solar jet fuel become a commercial product? The milestones achieved and our analyses of the performance potential speak in favour of further promoting the technology. However, in order to reduce the investment risk in a CAPEX-dominated technology, strategic partnerships for market introduction are also required. SWISS has announced that it will be the first airline to fly with solar kerosene from industrial production by Synhelion, the start-up spun off by project partner ETH Zurich. This could help the technology achieve a breakthrough.
